AGES 3-6 Prevention/Interception
In this very important stage we are concerned in the position and symmetry of the jaws, future growth, spacing of the teeth, breathing and other oral habits which may, over a period of time, result in abnormal dentofacial development. Some of the common procedures that are accomplished in this stage include: behavior modification for oral habits, Dental or space maintenance, Orthopedic changes with fixed or removable appliances, referral to medical specialists for tonsil or adenoid problems.
AGES 7-9 Interception/Correction
During this second stage of growth and development we deal with the mixed dentition (Primary and Secondary Teeth). The occlusion of the permanent teeth along with proper jaw alignment can determine present and future treatment concerns. Proceedures during this stage may include Orthodontic correction with removable or fixed appliances, guidance eruption of permanent teeth, early removal of primary teeth, orthopedic appliances.
This third stage of development is all about the ability of the jaws and teeth to work together in a fuctional and cosmetic harmony. Attention will be given to the joint (TMJ), the facial profile and periodontal tissues. Proceedures to accomplish these goals most likely will involve full Orthodontic treatment using fixed or removable appliances. The importance of maintaining the position and health of the teeth and soft tissues becomes a life long goal with both cooperation of the teenager/young adult and parents.
Recent years have brought about many changes within the dental industry, specifically with regards to orthodontic treatment and care. Now more than ever patients are experiencing fewer incidences of cavities and missing teeth due to the heightened awareness of fluoride use and preventative dentistry. This increasing awareness on the health and look of a patient’s smile has fueled the desire for many to seek out orthodontia not only as a medical necessity, but for cosmetic reasons as well.
Whether it’s traditional braces or custom made removable appliances, orthodontics can help you have the healthy, straight, beautiful smile you’ve been waiting for!

*Malocclusion is the technical term for teeth that don’t fit together correctly. Malocclusions not only affect the teeth, but also the appearance of the face. Most malocclusions are inherited; however some are due to acquired habits such as thumb sucking and tongue thrusting. The spacing left from an adult tooth being extracted or an early loss of a baby tooth can also contribute to a malocclusion.
